Stuart J. West,
born in 1970 in San Francisco, California,
formed West & Associates in February 2004.
Mr. West is a managing attorney at West &
Associates and is responsible for
coordinating prosecution, transactional and
litigation matters. In addition to
counseling clients in matters relating to
the litigation and licensing of intellectual
property rights, Mr. West’s practice also
includes counseling clients in obtaining,
protecting and enforcing rights associated
with patents, trademarks, service marks,
trade names, trade secrets and copyrights.
Mr. West has
extensive experience in obtaining,
protecting and enforcing rights associated
with patents, trademarks, service marks,
trade names, trade secrets and copyrights.
The technical fields of Mr. West’s practice
include flash memories, programmable logic
devices, architecture and fabrication of
semiconductor devices, disk and tape drive
mechanics and electronics, holographic
optical elements, optical networking,
optical data storage and transmission, voice
and data telecommunications and other
technologies related to mechanical,
electrical, civil and/or structural
engineering.
Mr. West holds
a B.S. in Civil Engineering from U.C.
Berkeley (1993), an M.S. in Structural
Engineering from U.C. Berkeley (1995) and a
J.D. from Golden Gate University, School of
Law (1998). Mr. West is also currently
working towards his M.S. in Electrical
Engineering from San Jose State University.
Prior to
forming and joining West & Associates, Mr.
West was a senior associate attorney with
Bingham McCutchen LLP in the Silicon Valley
office (2004 – 2005) where he handled all
aspects of U.S. and international
intellectual property law for large
multi-national corporations and smaller
corporate clients. Prior to joining Bingham
McCutchen, Mr. West was an associate
attorney with Fliesler Meyer LLP in San
Francisco, California (2001 – 2004) where he
specialized in U.S. and international
intellectual property law across a broad
spectrum of technologies. Mr. West was also
a patent attorney with the Law Offices of
Terry McHugh in Los Altos, California (1999
– 2001) where he specialized in U.S patent
law. Additionally, Mr. West worked with the
Institute for Patent Studies as a technology
expert and expert in patent law procedure.
Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr.
West was an engineer with DASSE Design, Inc.
in San Francisco, California (1996 – 2001)
where he was responsible for the original
design and seismic retrofit of numerous
schools, hospitals and other structures.
Mr. West is
licensed to practice law in California
(1999) and Washington, D.C. (2003). Mr. West
is registered to practice before the United
States Patent and Trademark Office (1997).
Mr. West is also admitted to the Roll of
Solicitors for England and Wales (2004) and
his registration as a European Attorney is
pending.
Mr. West is the founding chairman of the San Francisco
chapter of the Licensing Executives Society, President of the
Intellectual Property Section of the Contra Costa County Bar Association, and is
associate professor of
Intellectual Property & Patent law at CSU East Bay.
He is an active member of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),
Chi Epsilon Engineering Honor Society (XE),
the American Bar Association (ABA), the San
Francisco and Silicon Valley Intellectual
Property Law Associations (SFIPLA & SVIPLA),
the American Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA)
and the Bar Association of San Francisco
(BASF).
Additionally, Mr. West is a California
Registered Professional Engineer
(P.E.-Civil), Licensed California General
Building Contractor (Class B) and a
California Licensed Real Estate Broker.
